One of two artists singled out for “special mention” by the jury of the 2013 Venice Biennale, Sharon Hayes examines the intersections of history, politics, and public speech in her work.
Hayes borrows approaches from theater, anthropology, film and journalism to explore such wide-ranging topics as student activism, the Patty Hearst kidnapping and gender and sexual politics.
Loudspeakers and Other Forms of Listening features video and audio installations, works on paper and textiles made by Hayes over the last decade, including several works that reflect on the university as an influential place and time in the formation of our personal and political identities.
Hayes is an assistant professor in the School of Art at Cooper Union in New York City and is represented by Tanya Leighton Gallery, Berlin.
