Embodied practices of care series // Sweepings, steepings: A communal meal

July 22, 2021

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Enjoy a communal meal (on Zoom!) in contemplation of the natural and collective movements of cycling, sedimentation and convening

Please join Zahra Komeylian and Ayumi Goto for a collaborative performance through the cooking of a shared meal.

This free event takes place on Zoom. Please register here. Live captioning will be available.

Offering a food-based contemplation of Jin-me Yoon: Here Elsewhere Other Hauntings (an experiment in pandemic times), Komeylian and Goto will lead a collective performance that uses food as a means of experimenting with alternative modes of care and critical engagement outside of institutional boundaries.

Courses will be paired with the collective readings of texts that integrate ideas emerging from witnessing Yoon’s video Other Hauntings (Song) (2016). This communal meal is meant to provide moments of rest, care and communal joy, which are important in the midst of ongoing and urgent political tumult, and the heightened manifestation of fatigue in our collective bodies.

This workshop is open to participants in the GTA and Ottawa/Gatineau. Participants will receive a package containing food ingredients for three courses for two people. You will be asked to purchase a few produce items in preparation for the dinner. All materials provided are vegan and gluten free. No cooking experience is required!

Participants

Zahra Komeylian and Ayumi Goto’s ongoing collaboration explores slow and quieter ways of engaging artistic practice. This is their second collaborative performance presented during the COVID-19 pandemic. Examining food-making and food-sharing as both material practice and mode of inquiry, their performance interventions and research is concerned with the politics and potentialities of radical care and care-work.
