Photo contest

spirit-bite-video-dream

February 14 - March 13, 2026

Attn: Indigenous Students!

Inspired by Greg A. Hill’s current exhibition, kahyónha_kárha_atenoseràke_karònyake / streamforestlawnsky, where the artist uses his phone to map connection and territory, this contest invites Indigenous students to do the same.

Using 4 photographic “anchors,” participants are invited to chart their relationship to this city, their home territory, or a layered combo of both. Whether you grew up here, came for school or work, or have been here since time immemorial (#KZ / #Pik), many of us move between multiple homelands and regions, and our photos become living records that function beyond static documentation, tracing our movement through the places we call home.

The prompt: Take 4 photos, title each one with a single word, then write a brief description about what each image represents for you (aim for under 400 words).

Submissions will be reviewed and selected by two students. Winners will receive $250, and their photos will be shared on CUAG’s Instagram @cuartgallery. All entries will be included in a raffle for an additional prize in appreciation of your time and creativity. Some guiding vibes for the assignment: Imagination, openness, experimentation, tenderness, playfulness, wit, humour, and overall aesthetic artistic presence!

Submissions are due March 13th. Winners announced March 27th!

Confused about this assignment? So are we, lol. This is honestly an experiment, which you’re invited to be part of. If you have any questions, please email Dani at danielle.printup@carleton.ca. See the example below!!
