Andy Slater and Emily Cook: Unknown Area

September 14 - December 14, 2025

Welcome to a world, designed to be navigated by sound and touch, that centres ways of knowing by people on the Blind spectrum.

Unknown Area creates a speculative archaeological encounter with collected evidence from an outpost where scientists and artists once worked. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to take on the role of researchers in order to piece together the site’s history through artefacts and artistic interventions.

This exploratory exhibition results from Andy Slater and Emily Cook’s years of research, collecting, documenting and uncovering clues about an alternate world where sound and touch are central tools of participation. This world is one built by individuals on the Blind spectrum.

As Cook writes, “We live in a world that centres the experiences of sighted people. As individuals on the spectrum of Blindness, our experiences are akin to that of a parallel world.”

Visitors to Unknown Area can explore sound stations, tactile technologies, and life forms, engaging with a world independent of mainstream sight.
