Collaborative Photo Quilt (I)

January 25 - May 3, 2026

Guided by traditions of African-Nova Scotian quilt making, domestic galleries as sites of resistance and the role of the snapshot in constructing decolonizing images of the self, this quilt announces our visual complexities as diasporic peoples.

Snapshots provide space for intimacy, presence and complex relationality. This workshop, which invited participants to pair one of their own photos with that of a stranger, encouraged participants to draw connections between their own familial archives and those of the people around them. Through a two-part collaborative photo quilt-making workshop series, facilitated in June 2025 and January 2026 by artist Felicity Hauwert, with assistance from Saivani Sanassy and Xavior Gough, seventeen participants gathered to think about their relationships to photography, textiles, storytelling, archiving practices, memory and grief.
